Johann Hjartarson

Johann Hjartarson was born 8. february 1963. He won the IM title in 1984 and the GM title in 1985.

His international break through came in 1987 when he unexpected won the interzonal in Szirak, Hungary. In the following candidate tournament he first won against Victor Korchnoi before he lost in the quarterfinal to Anatoly Karpov. Other great results followed and on the January 1st 1989 world ranking Hjartarson reached 11th place.

Before becoming a professional chess player Hjartarson studied law and became a lawyer. Today Hjartarson has given up professional chess and has returned to law only occasional playing chess.
